I'm about 200 pages from the end of MIDDLESEX by Jeffrey Eugenides and need some help from one of you who has already ready the book. (Not a spoiler question, don't worry.) Can somebody tell me why Calli's brother is named Chapter Eleven? All the other characters have normal names except this one, and it's not explained at all -- or I missed it. Thoughts?

Can't help but I did pick a copy of Middlesex up at the library-and put it down as I'm trying to finish 2 other books. Can't wait to hear your review.
Judy
...maybe he was conceived during bankruptcy?
Judy
Check page 512.
(I googled "why named chapter eleven")

Sorry, the rest of the link didn't show up. But you know how I got there....
:)
As it turns out, I quit reading MIDDLESEX shortly after I posted my question (although I still want to know the answer). Life's too short to slog through unengaging books when there are so many other ones vying for my attention. Is it appropriate to post a review of a book I gave up on 2/3 of the way through?
yes, I'd like to hear why it wasn't worth it!
Goes right along with the poll on the front page (I assume Judy put it there)--I decided to answer it twice since there isn't a "sometimes" choice. But it wouldn't let me.
Yes, Michelle, post it! I'm not going to make it through my book either and I'm going to post something.
And Olga, how did you know I put up the poll?
Signed,
Curious
And when I finally did go to page 512, I was even more grateful that I hadn't bothered to read to the end. The justification for this character's name, which was used throughout the ENTIRE book, only warranted 4 sentences. Not a chapter or even a measly paragraph. Four summary sentences. So lame. I'm composing an even crankier review than the one I'd originally planned.
